Running For Ruby

Running for Ruby

My name is Anne and I am part of a group of 40+ people running the Southampton 10k on 5th September 2021 in memory of Ruby Leaity. Ruby was our much loved neighbour who tragically took her own life in July last year aged just 23 years. Following her death, Ruby’s family and friends raised over £11,000 for Solent Mind, a local charity that provides support for those suffering with mental health issues. Together with Ruby’s Dad, Mark, Solent Mind have set up a project in Ruby’s name to provide mentoring and support for people with mental health problems to seek and keep employment. By ‘Running for Ruby’ on 5th September, we are hoping to raise more money and awareness to enable this project to keep going. Motivation & Focus

We are runners of all ages, abilities, shapes and sizes but we all want to honour Ruby by pushing ourselves to run. The group includes some of Ruby’s close family members, friends and neighbours. Signing up for the 10k has given us a goal to work towards and provided something positive to focus on in the midst of the differing levels of grief that we are going through. The Southampton 10k has brought us together and hopefully given us an opportunity to make a difference to other people suffering with their mental health. This year, more than ever with the ongoing pandemic, that feels hugely important.
