Interview with Macmillan

Interview with Macmillan’s Southampton Marathon Team Captain

How does Macmillan support people living with cancer in Hampshire?

There are 70,400 people living with cancer in Hampshire, and Macmillan estimate that this will rise to 112,000 by 2030. Our services are there to support people with the physical, financial and emotional impact of cancer. Just one way we support people living with cancer in Hampshire is by funding 18 Macmillan professionals, ranging from Macmillan nurses and doctors to other health and social care professionals, who are there to give the best quality care and support we can.

How does the ABP Southampton Marathon support Macmillan?

Southampton Marathon is one of Macmillan Cancer Support’s key southern running events, and a supporter favourite! The scenic route and the different distance options available are popular with first-time and long-standing Macmillan supporters. This year we are hoping to raise £35,000 from this event, which is a big number, but we need to take big steps to support people living with cancer. £35,000 could fund a Macmillan nurse for 7 months who could provide vital practical, clinical and emotional support to people living with cancer.

How can people get involved with running the ABP Southampton Marathon for Macmillan?

There are two ways people can join Team Macmillan for the ABP Southampton Marathon 2022, and however you choose to join Team Macmillan, we would love to have you on board!

You can either sign-up with ABP Southampton Marathon and then use your place to run for Macmillan, or you can use one of our charity places in this event. If you would like to join us in Southampton, just head to our website to sign-up today!

How can the fundraising pledge of £350 contribute to Macmillan?

If you choose to take on ABP Southampton Marathon 2022 using one of our charity places, we ask you to commit to a £350 fundraising pledge. This pledge is there so we can continue to provide our Macmillan services which support people affected by cancer. A way we support people living with cancer is through our Macmillan Support Line, which is a service that allows people to access a wide range of support, from cancer information to financial guidance. In 2020, 1,351 people called Macmillan’s Support Line services from Hampshire.

Your £350 fundraising pledge could help a member of our Cancer Information and Support team on our Macmillan Support Line deal with 19 calls or web enquiries from people needing our support.

How can people reach their fundraising goals apart from running?

As part of Team Macmillan, we will support you every step of the way to reach your fundraising target for this event. We will send you our bumper digital fundraising pack, which is packed with tips and tricks to kick-start your fundraising, as well as regular updates which will include fundraising ideas to keep you on track.

The easiest way to reach your fundraising target is to set-up a JustGiving page. This makes it really easy for your friends and family to support your challenge, and you can share with them how your training is going in the lead-up to the event! Once you have picked your distance and registered with Team Macmillan, we will send you the JustGiving link for your challenge to get you started.

Can people support your event without taking part?

If running is not for you but you would still like to get involved with ABP Southampton Marathon 2022, we need an army of volunteers to cheer on our amazing Team Macmillan runners! If you would like to volunteer and soak up the incredible atmosphere in Southampton, you can contact our Volunteering team here.
